It’s behaviour observed in most dogs – and frequently, owners leap to incorrect assumptions about its significance. However, veterinarian Nicole Rous has explained exactly why dogs eat grass – and when it’s something to worry about.
In a TikTok video, Nicole, who posts online as @drnicolerous.vet, outlined four typical explanations for why your dog might indulge in a snack while outside in the garden, saying: « Ever wondered why dogs munch on grass? You’re not alone, here are some insightful reasons behind this common behaviour. » The initial explanation, she noted, is boredom or curiosity, saying: « Dogs are naturally curious creatures, and sometimes they investigate their environment by nibbling on what’s around them. »
Subsequently, she proposed it might be connected to their ancestral behaviour. « This may stem from their ancestors, who consumed plant matter as part of their diet, potentially in search of extra fibre, » she explained.
Nevertheless, the two explanations that tend to cause owners the greatest anxiety are an upset stomach and nutritional deficiencies. « One reason that concerns many pet owners is that some dogs eat grass to soothe an upset tummy or to induce vomiting, » she said. « If your dog frequently eats grass and seems uncomfortable, it’s important to consult your veterinarian. »
She additionally highlighted that dogs may consume grass – or even soil – while seeking trace minerals they might be missing from their diet. Offering her general guidance, Nicole concluded: « If your furry friend only occasionally nibbles on grass and is otherwise healthy, there’s usually no need to worry. But if grass-eating becomes a frequent habit, a chat with your vet is a wise step. »
Responding to her post, one user revealed: « My GSD (German shepherd) eats grass as part of a routine when swimming in the pool. She does some laps in the pool, then a lap around it, and as she goes past she grabs strands of grass through the fence. So odd. »
Another user shared: « My five-year-old Jack Russell eats grass occasionally, and it’s usually to soothe his tummy as he has inflammatory bowel disease. It worries me because I know when he eats grass, it means he’s having a mini flare-up and must be feeling off-colour. »
A third user revealed: « My dog just loved the taste. He only ate buffalo grass! He was never sick, had a great balanced diet, and his blood work was always really good. He was just odd. »
One more user suggested: « I’m pretty sure my dogs eat grass as a social behaviour. If I’m outside playing with grass, they come over and start eating it too. »
A final user explained: « My almost two-year-old mini Groodle eats grass a lot. I try to feed her fresh food – meat, veggies and fruit – but she’s very fussy and won’t eat much, not even carrot sticks, bananas or celery. »
