When choosing the right dog breed for your home, it can be tough to know where to start. While all dogs have their charms, some breeds are naturally more well-behaved and easier to train than others. Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or have years of experience, figuring out which breed best fits your lifestyle and is easiest to live with can feel overwhelming. After all, a well-behaved dog not only brings joy to your home but also makes daily routines like walks and social events much more enjoyable and easier to navigate.

Writing for the expert advice website PetsRadar, animal behaviourist Caroline Wilkinson sets the record straight. She said, « When researching the best-behaved dog breeds, you first want to decide what you want from a new dog in your life.

« Do you want a high energy dog breed, ready for long hikes or running? Do you want them to be more laid back, a complete sofa snoozer? Or perhaps you want to compete at a dog sport with them. »

She added: « For the average pet home, we want a dog who is comfortable around people as a starting point.

« Working or herding dog breeds who are inclined to work with their human as a team or lap dog breeds – bred purely as a companion animal – can be easier to train than more independent breeds. »

Some of the best behaved dog breeds include Golden Retrievers, prized for their gentle and patient nature, Border Collies, known for their high intelligence and strong work ethic, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, valued for their affectionate and adaptable temperament.

According to experienced veterinarian Dr. Rebecca MacMillan, Newfoundlands also rank among the most well behaved breeds she encounters in her practice. Despite their large size, these dogs tend to be patient and affectionate, fitting well into family life.

With proper socialisation and training, especially in recall, they can be very dependable even off-leash.

According to MacMillan, temperament also has a « significant inherited component », meaning a dog’s behaviour traits, such as fearfulness, aggression, and sociability, are also influenced by its parents.

However, even selecting a dog from well tempered parents and a reputable breed does not eliminate the need for proper training. Without consistent guidance, any dog can develop unwanted habits. Training is essential to nurture good behaviour and ensure your dog reaches its full potential.
