Sky has told customers it is abolishing its money back guarantee for broadband as part of its price rises in place from April.

The broadband and TV giant has announced a raft of mid-contract price rises for customers to take effect from April 1.

It means that broadband prices will rise by £3 a month for most customers, while basic and premium TV packages will increase by between £1 and £3 a month. Home phone prices will also increase £1 a month.

Sky does not follow Ofcom rules which say customers must be told about any future price rises in their contract in a pounds and pence figure up front. Because of this ‘variable pricing’ loophole, Sky customers hit with the price rise are free to cancel within 30 days of the price increase notification, without incurring any extra charges.

As well as the price rise, Sky told customers in its emails about price hikes that it is also changing its terms and conditions to abolish its money back guarantee for broadband speeds.

It said, in an email seen by the Express: “Speed Guarantee: we are removing the money back aspect of this guarantee. If we are unable to provide your minimum guaranteed download speed, you will still be able to cancel your contract without paying early termination charges.

“Wall‍-‍to‍-‍Wall Wi‍-‍Fi Guarantee: we are retiring this guarantee. You will still be able to rely on the Speed Guarantee or the Wi‍-‍Fi Max Guarantee as applicable to your subscription.

“To make things clearer, we will be renaming the Enhanced Wall‍-‍to‍-‍Wall WiFi Guarantee that you get under Wi‍-‍Fi Max. In future it will be called the Wi‍-‍Fi Max Guarantee.”

Previously, the money back guarantee meant Sky would give you money back if you couldn’t get the speed advertised by Sky for three days in a row.

The Wall-to-Wall Wi-Fi guarantee had offered money back to broadband customers if they couldn’t get at least 3Mb/s speed Wi-Fi in every room.
