Fans of Western films have been treated to a brand new one that has just landed on streaming for UK subscribers. Westerns have been a favourite genre of film for generations of film fans. From old Hollywood up until now, Westerns often appear in cinemas and on streaming services. The latest addition to the genre, which has just landed on Amazon Prime Video, has an impressive cast of stars and has been called « remarkable » by some viewers.
Rust has just been added to the streaming service for UK customers, and it stars big names like Alec Baldwin and Josh Hokins. The story follows a 13-year-old boy who is left to fend for himself and his brother after their parents’ death. He is brought on a journey to Old Mexico by his grandfather after being sentenced to hang for an accidental killing. The film is set in 1880s Wyoming, fitting it perfectly in the western genre.
It premiered at the Polish film festival Camerimage last year and has since been released for general audiences. Although it was met with mixed reviews from critics, casual film fans have seemed to enjoy it so far.
It has a critic score of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is considered a relatively low score. However, audiences gave it a combined score of 71% with a lot more positive reviews than negative ones.
Alec Baldwin plays an elderly outlaw who rescues the young boy from his hanging. Among the positive audience reviews, one reads: « The attention to detail in Rust is simply remarkable and the performances are outstanding! If you appreciate thoughtful filmmaking that combines artistic vision with genuine entertainment value then Rust is absolutely worth your time! »
Another said: « This is a really good movie with a strong, engaging story. I was hooked from beginning to end. The cinematography was outstanding and added so much to the overall experience. »
A third wrote: « Best western I’ve seen in years, dark print but that’s what the lighting was like in those days, good storyline and all the different photo shots and wide screen shots, awesome. »
As well as Rust, Amazon Prime Video recently added The Ritual (2025), Never (2016) and Cabin Fever (2016).
