Households in Scotland are being urged not to miss out on a £150 discount that could help ease the burden of rising energy bills this winter.
The UK Government’s Warm Home Discount scheme will reopen in October, automatically applying the rebate to many vulnerable households’ accounts. However, in Scotland, most low-income households must actively apply for it, and the support is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Advice Direct Scotland, which operates the energy advice service energyadvice.scot, is encouraging eligible residents to contact their energy suppliers as soon as possible.
The consumer advice organisation warned that this winter could be particularly challenging, with the energy price cap increasing from October 1. The rise is expected to add around £35 to the average annual household bill compared to last year.
Some energy providers may also extend the discount to additional customers, while park home residents who pay site owners for electricity can apply through a separate scheme.
Jillian Edmund, energy project lead at Advice Direct Scotland, said: « Households across Scotland are facing high energy bills this winter, and this £150 support can make a real difference for families on tighter budgets. It’s important to check whether you’re entitled to any help and apply as early as possible.
« If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, look out for a letter telling you when the payment will be applied. Others on certain benefits or low incomes should contact their supplier to see if they qualify.
« If you’re at all unsure or need assistance, our team is ready to guide you through the process. Visit energyadvice.scot or call 0808 196 8660 for free, confidential advice and support. »
Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount in Scotland?
If you live in Scotland, you qualify if you either:
You don’t need to apply if you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. You’ll automatically get a letter telling you about the discount if you’re eligible.
However, those who don’t get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit will need to apply directly to their energy supplier.
According to the official Government website, you might be eligible if all of the following apply:
Your electricity supplier may have extra eligibility criteria. They’ll also tell you which benefits mean you are eligible. This is known as being in the ‘broader group’.
If you’re found to be eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. You’ll need to stay with your supplier until it’s paid, which will be at some point between October and March of the scheme year.
