Netflix fans can’t get enough of what has been dubbed as ‘one of the best romantic comedies in years’.

Ghost Town, a recent addition to the streaming giant’s vast catalogue, has rapidly ascended to become one of the most viewed titles on the platform.

At present, it holds the sixth spot in the top 10 chart for most popular films among UK viewers.

This positions it just behind the newly released Happy Gilmore 2 at the pinnacle and Adam Sandler’s original film in fourth place.

Nonetheless, the 2008 film is certainly experiencing a revival, with numerous viewers reacquainting themselves with this supernatural romantic comedy.

Per the film’s synopsis, after a near-death experience during a routine colonoscopy, misanthropic dentist Bertrum Pincus, portrayed by Gervais, is astounded to find that he can suddenly communicate with the deceased.

Persistently hounded by disgruntled spirits seeking his assistance to settle their earthly issues, the antisocial Pincus is driven to distraction. Eventually persuaded into aiding the dearly departed Frank Herlihy, played by Greg Kinnear, Pincus endeavours to speak to Frank’s widow, Gwen, reports the Mirror.

However, complications ensue when Bertram becomes infatuated with her.

Ghost Town was directed and co-written by David Koepp, who boasts a unique filmography, primarily as a scriptwriter.

He has written the scripts for films such as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, the original Jurassic Park, Tom Cruise’s reboot of The Mummy and most recently the spy thriller Black Bag and Jurassic World Rebirth.

The movie secured an impressive 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Numerous critics, alongside audiences, were taken with The Office co-creator Gervais’ turn in what marked his debut as a leading man on the big screen.

Gervais had previously appeared in supporting roles in Stardust and Night At The Museum.

The film is now regarded as a hidden treasure within the romantic comedy genre, ideal for admirers of the comedian or those who enjoy the style.

As one fan puts it:  » Ghost Town plays as a romantic comedy for all audiences. It obviously features and advertises the romance angle, but Gervais’s presence and dry humor, in addition to a deeper-than-expected story, makes it well worth a watch for the guys, too. This is one of the best romantic comedies in years. Never is it trite, superficial, or dull. It plays quickly, remains focused, and features just the right mix of laughs, love, and heart to make it a memorable and worthwhile experience. »

One enthusiast, expressing their views online, remarked: « What an underrated romance-comedy with some life lessons learned throughout. They don’t make movies like this anymore I think. »

Another commented: « This is one of my favourite comedy films that is great for repeat viewing. Ricky Gervais is perfect as the grumpy dentist that just wants to be left along, and Greg Kinnear serves as the perfect foil. »

Meanwhile, a third contributor noted: « Hilarious and beautiful romantic comedy that perfectly tackles the feeling of loneliness and redemption. Underrated by most, but not by me. »

Ghost Town is streaming on Netflix.
