Netflix has just added one of the most controversial thrillers of the 2020s which boasts a jaw-dropping finale you’ll never see coming.

This 2023 picture was based on the debut novel by a bestselling writer who later created one of the most discussed books across TikTok and Instagram.

While earning an impressive 81 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, viewers have remained deeply divided, awarding it just a 53 percent rating.

The film proved immediately divisive following its Sundance debut in January 2023, with critic Amanda the Jedi observing on X: « EILEEN is so far the biggest ‘well that took a turn’ movie of the fest. Gonna be polarizing but a lot of people will love it. Ending certainly gonna split people. »

We’re discussing the film Eileen, adapted from the novel of the same title by writer Ottessa Moshfegh, who subsequently authored My Year of Rest and Relaxation.

Featuring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie, it explores the complicated bond between two women employed at a juvenile detention centre in 1960s Massachusetts.

Despite Eileen’s divisive response, numerous thriller enthusiasts remain convinced it represents one of the most overlooked fresh releases of the 2020s. One five-star Google review gushed: « This little gem of a movie was a surprising hit with me! I saw it a few times. Even the score was great and I’m not a Jazz fan.

« I can’t recommend it enough! See it! It’s only 90 minutes but, you’ll be thinking about weeks later, like [I] am. »

Another viewer praised the film’s unpredictable storyline: « Very original. Unpredictable. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen next but I was always wrong. Excellent cast. »

« All said, Eileen is a four-star flick that offers more twists than a pretzel factory, » another glowing review declared.

« It’s perfect for those who like their thrillers with a hefty dose of bizarre and a sprinkle of existential dread. Crack open the popcorn and settle in; just don’t expect to sleep easy afterwards. This film sticks with you, like gum on your shoe. »

Meanwhile, another viewer who was baffled by the shocking finale commented: « I enjoyed the first half of the movie especially with Anne and Thomazin’s chemistry but damn the plot twist hit me so hard it lost me, got me frustrated, so confused and got me on the edge of my seat.

« It’s definitely intriguing but the ending makes you lose your mind and want to know more. There are so many questions that needed answers. »

A final stunned fan remarked: « I’m so used to seeing movies like this and guessing what’s gonna happen next but this one I can say it had me shocked.

« I was on my toes, good movie but just like any other movie the ending can get you a little mad. But I recommend watching it! »

Fancy a psychological thriller with a twist ending that’ll leave you absolutely fuming? Netflix has got exactly what you need.

Eileen is available to stream on Netflix.
