Nationwide Building Society customers have just a few weeks left to claim a £50 payment. The mutual issued a one-off payment to millions of customers – but some people may not have collected their cash yet. This relates to a bonus payment scheme from last year so you may have forgotten to complete an important account action to get the funds paid into your account.

Nationwide issued payments of £50 to over 12 million customers last year as part of its The Big Nationwide Thank You payment. This was to say thank you after the mutual took on Virgin Money. Most of the payments were paid into bank accounts but some people were issued a cheque.

If you were sent a cheque, you need to cash it in soon to be paid the £50. Guidance on the Nationwide website explains: « Cheques must be paid in by 1 January 2026 to make sure you don’t miss out on the payment. »

Who was eligible for the £50 Nationwide Big Thank You payment?

To qualify for the bonus payment, you had to be a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024. You also had to still be a customer when the payment was issued last year.

Other eligibility rules included that in the 12 months to the end of September 2024, you must have either:

  • Had at least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
  • Had at least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
  • Owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.

You also qualified if you completed a switch to any Nationwide current account between July 1, 2024 and September 30, 2024, using the Current Account Switch Service.

How was the £50 Nationwide bonus paid?

If you were paid the amount directly into your account, the £50 was paid either into a current account, an instant access or a limited access savings account in your name. If you were a mortgage customer, the £50 was paid into the bank account used to pay your mortgage direct debit, if the account was in your name.

All other payments were sent out as a cheque in the post.
