Lidl has updated shoppers in three communities about its plans to open new stores in the areas. The German supermarket giant, which has more than 1,000 stores across the UK, has ambitious expansion plans. It recently announced that it has earmarked 40 sites for new Lidl stores. Meanwhile, it has confirmed 19 new stores for 2026.
Lidl opened new stores in the UK just last week, with five debuted on the same day. Lidl opened stores in Caldy Valley Road in Chester, Oxford Road in Calne, Yaxham Road in Dereham, Purbrook Way in Havant and Stamford Hill in London on February 19. According to the supermarket, these new stores have created 120 new jobs. While excitement builds about the other confirmed stores, Lidl has offered updates on the other sites it has set its sights on.
Lidl confirmed that it continues to explore plans to bring stores to Llandudno, Abergele and Rhyl in North Wales. A spokesperson told the Pioneer and the Journal: “We continue to have active site requirements in Abergele, Llandudno and Rhyl to help meet the rising demand we’re continuing to see across Wales.
“These are not our only requirements for the region, as we always consider towns and areas large enough to support stores where we do not have representation.
“We also have relocation requirements where legacy stores are considered no longer fit for purpose and cannot be adapted to our modern format.”
Lidl already has several stores in North Wales, including Llandudno Junction, Colwyn Bay, Prestatyn, Denbigh and Bangor.
Lidl recently published a wish list of sought-after locations where it could open stores. This includes 250 sites in London as well as a slew of locations in Scotland.

- Basildon, Laindon
