Driving late at night brings additional hazards that motorists rarely encounter during daylight hours.
One of the most significant risks involves wildlife, especially on rural routes or grassy areas, where deer or foxes might suddenly dart across your path, forcing emergency braking.
This scenario unfolded for one motorist who believed she’d narrowly avoided striking a fox, only to discover the terrified creature before her vehicle was actually a small dog.
The woman, named Chloe, explained she stepped out after slamming her brakes and discovered a young pup « covered in paint. » This prompted her to lift the pup up and place him in her motor to take him home to safety.
The animal bore what looked like white paint across its limbs, with several marks on its back, and appeared visibly distressed as it huddled in the passenger footwell whilst Chloe drove home.
In a TikTok clip, she revealed plans to bring him to the DSPCA (Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) the next morning, but given the late hour, she had to house him overnight until her local refuge opened.
After arriving home with the hound, Chloe prepared a blanket for his rest and began cooking chicken and rice for his meal, as the malnourished puppy appeared ravenous and required something gentle that wouldn’t disturb his digestion.
Whilst attempting to feed the animal, Chloe became emotional.
She explained that upon standing, the dog was « scared away from the food ». The woman was left in disbelief that anyone could abandon the puppy in such a terrified state, and she was seen wiping away tears in the emotional video.
Comforting the pup, she said: « I’m not going to hurt you, I promise ».
The next morning, Chloe took the dog to her local DSPCA shelter and received some fantastic news – the shelter would be able to take him in.
She expressed: « We’ve just arrived at the DSPCA and I’m actually so upset. I know it’s the best place for him, and I’m so happy that they’re taking him, but I’m so devastated. I’m so sad to see him go.
« I bawled as I was handing him in, but the staff here are lovely. They’ve taken some photos of him to see if anyone owns him. I didn’t think I’d be this upset! »
Commenters on the post praised Chloe for looking after the dog – although many enquired when she would be returning to officially adopt the puppy as they seemed to have already formed such a bond.
One individual commented: « He’s so lucky to have found you! How could anyone do that to the pure little baby? » Another chimed in: « Please tell me you’re going to adopt him. »

Others noted that the woman’s living situation might not be suitable for full-time dog care, and therefore the shelter is the best place for the dog to find a loving and appropriate forever home.
