Sinners has made Oscar history with a record-breaking number of nominations for this year’s awards. Ryan Coogler’s horror has been nominated in 16 of the 24 categories, the highest for any film in history.
The film earned nods in the best picture, director and original screenplay categories, while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo are up for best lead actor and supporting actor, respectively. Sinners has now surpassed the previous record set by Titanic, All About Eve and La La Land (14).
Sinners was a critical and box office smash when it landed in cinemas last year, becoming the highest-grossing original film since Christopher Nolan’s Inception in 2015. Written and directed by Black Panther director Coogler, it stars Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers.
Set in 1930s Mississippi, it follows Smoke and Stack Moore as they try to leave their troubled lives behind by returning to their hometown for a fresh start. only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell and newcomer Miles Caton.
Sinners will compete with the likes of One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, with US comedian Conan O’Brien hosting proceedings at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre. Until then, anyone keen to see what the fuss is about can watch the film at home.
Sinners is available on demand on Sky Cinema here in the UK, meaning existing subscribers can watch it at no extra cost. Those without a Sky package can get the £25 Essential TV and Sky Cinema bundle, which includes Sinners and more than 1,000 other films.
It also provides access to around 100 TV channels along with free Netflix, Paramount+ and Discovery+ subscriptions. Sky Cinema customers can also claim two free Vue cinema tickets each month.
A caveat here is that Sky requires customers to sign up for 24 months, while the price may increase each year. Sinners is not currently streaming on Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon’s Prime Video. Sinners is also available with a NOW Cinema membership that’s £6.99 per month for 12 months, but there’s no TV or streaming services included here.
Elsewhere, Amazon customers can buy Sinners on Prime Video for £9.99.
