March has finally arrived, which means spring is just around the corner. It’s the time of year when households across the UK begin their annual spring clean, getting their homes back into top shape. One particularly frustrating task, however, always seems to leave rooms looking worse before they look better: dusting.

Fortunately, a household expert has shared a “life-changing” hack that can keep dust at bay for weeks. The expert at Apartment Therapy credited their grandmother for the tip, explaining: “You don’t need a whole caddy of cleaning supplies to get your home in tip-top shape. You can cut your cleaning time in half by using a dusting spray instead of an ordinary surface cleaner.”

They continued: “The coating that the spray leaves on surfaces helps prevent dust from adhering and settling in, which means you’ll have to clean those hard-to-dust places a little less frequently.”

How to make the dust-repelling spray

To make the dust-repellent spray, combine two cups of water with one cup of vinegar, which helps to disinfect surfaces and cut through grime.

Next, add two tablespoons of olive oil, which is needed for polishing and helps keep dust away for longer, along with one to two drops of dish soap for extra cleaning power.

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl or measuring cup. Finally, pour the mixture into a clean spray bottle and gently shake it before each use.

You can then spray it onto surfaces and wipe down everything from credenzas to coffee tables. According to the expert, you can use this spray on most surfaces.

They advised: “Try it on your coffee table, bookshelves, desks, dressers, and side tables. You can also use the spray on baseboards, window ledges, door trim, and picture frame ledges.

“To keep your surfaces from becoming too damp (which isn’t the best for wood), spray the solution onto a microfiber rag rather than onto the surface itself.”
