Most of us have chopped an onion at some point in our lives without much difficulty.

However, a ‘brilliant’ trick has been revealed online that promises to make the task of cutting onions easier than ever before.

Many people use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin from their vegetables, but did you know it can also be used for chopping? A video posted on the Instagram account @allthingsexplained_ demonstrated exactly this, with overlay text stating: « A trick that may seem obvious, but that many people ignore. »

The individual was seen grating slices off the onion using the peeler. It appears that many were unaware of this technique, as the post garnered over 301,000 likes.

One user exclaimed: « What the hell lol that’s brilliant, » while another commented: « Love this. »

A third added: « Work smarter not harder. » While a fourth said: « Me learning new tips for when I start cooking. »

Despite the popularity of the tip, some believed using a knife was just as simple. One person complained: « So, nobody can use a simple knife these days?  » Another concurred: « Or you can just learn how to properly use a knife and cut it thin. »

The tip comes after experts revealed how to store onions properly so that they last half a year and don’t go mouldy.

The professionals at Shop Food Waste advised: « Never keep these items in sealed plastic as it will quickly cause spoilage. »

Plastic bags foster the encasing of moisture, fostering mould growth. Instead, you ought to « keep onions and garlic in a basket or paper bag where air can circulate ».
