If you’re currently looking for a new job, you might have noticed the market is tough right now. Data from the Office for National Statistics revealed unemployment rose to 4.6% in the three months to April, climbing from 4.5% in the three months to March and marking the highest level since the three months to July 2021.
The figures also provided more evidence of cracks appearing in the job market. The estimated number of payrolled workers fell by 55,000 between March and April, with an even steeper decline of 109,000 in May, though the ONS cautioned against over-interpreting the figure as it was subject to revisions.
Meanwhile, the estimated number of job openings dropped by 63,000 to 736,000 in March to May.
While it might appear like an impossible mission to find employment at the moment, one former recruiter has revealed a trick she recently discovered that will boost your prospects of being noticed by recruiters and invited to job interviews.
Taking to TikTok, former recruiter Sophie made a video where she disclosed her latest discoveries on LinkedIn for making job hunting simpler.
« If you’re looking for a job right now, then I’ve just discovered a very snazzy little hack on LinkedIn that is gonna help you get one even quicker, » she said at the beginning of her video.
« And as a former recruiter, I can tell you that it’s super important that you apply to a job within a day of it being posted, » she added before revealing her trick that will help ensure you’re among the first applicants. In the video, Sophie demonstrates how to use LinkedIn’s job search function on her computer screen.
She inputs ‘operations’ as a keyword for finding jobs and ensures her location settings are correct before initiating her search.
Rather than immediately browsing through the job adverts, Sophie advises viewers to adjust the search options further. She selects the ‘date posted’ option and ticks the ‘past 24 hours’ box before conducting another search.
« So these are obviously all the jobs that have been posted linked to operations in the past 24 hours, » she clarified.
She continued: « What you probably don’t realise is if you go into the [URL] search bar up here, and if you get rid of this 86,400, because that is actually the number of seconds in 24 hours. You want to shorten that, let’s for example put in 2000.
« Now, the number of searches is going to reduce, » she explained, showing her search results now include jobs posted within less than an hour, most with no applicants yet.
Sophie then explained why it’s crucial to apply early to a job listing: « Because of easy apply, it means that LinkedIn gets spammed with thousands upon thousands of applicants, but now at least you can be in the top two per cent. »
Her clever tip was met with praise from many who shared their thoughts in the comment section.
« Great tip hope this works for me, I’ll give it a go! » one viewer exclaimed. Another user chimed in: « THANK YOU! It worked for me! »
« Such a good tip Soph! » a third person added.
