Adopting a rescue dog can be a significant decision. It often takes time for these dogs to find their forever homes and the right owners who can transform their lives.

Prospective adopters should understand that it may take some time for the pet to adjust, establish a peaceful routine, and feel at home. Now a Reddit user recently shared a heartwarming story about a dog who was just a day away from being put down but was given a second chance at life – and five years later, they wouldn’t change a thing.

In the r/dog forum, which has a community of 478,000 members, the user posted: « I rescued my dog from being put down. Five years later, he rescued me too. »

Two photos were shared; one which showed the dog behind bars at the animal shelter, hoping for a second chance.

The second image beautifully captured an unrecognisable dog in his new home, looking healthier than ever.

The Reddit user disclosed how the dog was due to be put down.

Speaking at the time of posting on December 31, they said: « Tomorrow marks 5 years since I got my dog home from the animal shelter. He was scheduled to be put down the day before I got him.

« It’s been an amazing five years. Who would’ve thought the one I saved would end up saving me right back?

« No one at the shelter knew his exact birth date, so I decided his birthday would be January 1, a reminder that no matter what happens, we always get a chance to start again.

« Here’s to our new beginnings. Here’s to our second chances. Here’s to us choosing life. Happy New Year, everyone. »

While the Reddit post offered little explanation regarding why the dog faced euthanasia, countless users flocked to the comments to applaud their compassionate gesture.

The post has since accumulated 4,700 upvotes alongside numerous heartfelt responses.

One user exclaimed: « That’s wonderful and they are adorable! » Another chimed in: « Very glad that somebody took him from that shelter. How heartwarming. » A third person remarked: « Congrats, he looks so happy! »

Meanwhile, a fourth contributor gushed: « What a beautiful story! It made me tear up, but I love a happy ending and you both got one. He’s a very handsome boy. Happy Gotcha Day to your pup and Happy New Year to you both! »
