Netflix UK has added one of the most iconic thriller films from the 1990s. A number of beloved titles have landed on the streaming platform recently. In addition to a slew of comedies and dramas added to Netflix UK in June, some nail-biting thrillers and action flicks were added to the service for British subscribers. One of them is a thriller that fans still love to this day, even though it was released more than 25 years ago.

Cape Fear, starring Robert De Niro, was added to Netflix UK on June 30. The film was originally released in 1991 and is one of the actor’s most memorable performances. The Hollywood actor, who is now 81, plays Max Cady, who has just served a 14-year prison sentence for raping a young woman. After his release, he begins to stalk his defence lawyer, played by Nick Nolte, and his family after evidence that would have worked in his favour was concealed during his trial. This leads lawyer Max (Nolte) to take action outside of the law to protect his family.

The film received positive reviews from critics when it was first released. People were familiar with the story already as the 1991 flick was a remake of the classic 1962 thriller of the same name.

As well as Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro, the film stars Juliette Lewis, Jessica Lange and Illeana Douglas. From critics, the film has been well-received and audiences have had great things to say about it as well.

One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer said: « The original Cape Fear is good but not scary or thrilling, but this new version from Scorsese really terrified us and made it completely different and added new elements with Max Cady played by Robert DeNiro, and his performance is so sinister, clever and disturbing horror villain. »

Another called out the Rotten Tomatoes score that this film has, writing: « This is outrageous. How can this movie hold a 75%? This is a Scorsese masterpiece. »

A third said: « While not living up to the original, Scorsese casts De Niro in a terrifying role that to date, is his most complex and disturbed character in his repertoire of roles. While not up with the best of Martin Scorsese’s films, Cape Fear is a solid film with some well-developed characters and a disturbing story. »

A fourth commented: « Solid remake of a classic thriller. DeNiro is intense as the wild man, bent on revenge. It’s a little cartoony in how over the top it is, but that helps paint the mania of Cady, and makes him that much more menacing. »

As well as several new additions to Netflix in late June, there have been some exciting titles to drop onto the platform in July already. Other new titles on Netflix UK include Split (2016), Minority Report (2002), Insidious: The Last Key (2018), Homefront (2013), and Anger Management (2003).
