Freddie Mercury A World of His Own review – Unmissable step inside star’s home | Music | Entertainment

When Freddie Mercury died in 1991, he left much of his vast and luxurious estate to his ex-fiancée Mary Austin. This included his Garden Lodge home in Kensington and all its contents, the latter of which she has now decided to auction off in part for charity. From stylish furniture and gorgeous artwork to colourful clothes and handwritten Queen lyrics, 1400 lots from the music legend’s personal collection are now on display – from today – in a major month-long exhibition at Sotheby’s. Express.co.uk attended a special press reception last night at the auction house where Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own has taken over the vast majority of the building in central London. The result is a stunningly immersive experience where the interior of the star’s private Garden Lodge home has been...

Brian May’s drunken night with Eddie Van Halen led to a serious injury | Music | Entertainment

It’s been 40 years since Brian May recorded a mini-album on a whim with Eddie Van Halen. On a break from Queen in 1983, he decided to call up the late guitarist for a jam on what would eventually become the Star Fleet Sessions. He remembered: “I thought, I hardly ever see Ed. And wouldn’t it be great to have some time together, and not only that, but actually play and look into each other’s eyes and play off each other, see what happens? So that was an immense, a big kind of step for me.” “I’m a bit of a shy person, to be honest, and if I hadn’t been in that particularly ebullient kind of ‘I want to be free’ mood in Los Angeles, it never would have happened.” Sir Brian continued: “Me being in the studio with Ed, yeah, I was in awe. I mean, I’ve got to be...

This week’s episode of Queen the Greatest Live continues a look back at the band’s live covers. Last time around rare footage from the 1986 Magic Tour at Wembley Stadium unveiled Freddie Mercury and the gang performing Elvis Presley’s (You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care. This was part of a medley with Ricky Nelson’s Hello Mary Lou and Little Richard’s Tutti Frutti. And now the footage of the latter has been released for fans to enjoy in the video below. Roger Taylor said last week of Little Richard’s Tutti Frutti: “It’s kind of telling people this is why we love rock and roll, because these songs really influenced us. It’s nice to do those. It keeps our interest up and kind of broadens the show a bit.” Meanwhile, Sir Brian May told Total Guitar earlier this year that Tutti Fru...
