Gardeners urged to do two winter tasks – ‘you’ll thank yourself’ | Personal Finance | Finance

The weather may be getting colder and the nights are drawing in, but there are some important jobs to do in the garden. Gardening experts say this is the "perfect season" to get out in your green haven and do some tasks ready for the months ahead.Luke Newnes, gardening expert at homeware shop Hillarys, said it is important to have a light touch as the weather gets cooler and damper. He said: "Winter is a time to let parts of your garden rest. Avoid heavy pruning now – cutting back too much can expose plants to frost damage."Likewise, don’t dig up soil unnecessarily; disturbing the ground can harm its structure when it’s cold and wet." Petrol prices to rise if Rachel Reeves scraps fuel duty freeze | UK | News

Petrol prices could rocket if Rachel Reeves decides to scrap the freeze on fuel duty in next week's Autumn Budget. Fuel could rise to as much as 142p per litre if the freeze is ended by the Chancellor, the AA warned.Fuel duty has been frozen since 2011, and an additional 5p per litre was removed from prices in 2022 to help mitigate the impact of runaway oil costs on consumers, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Removing the freeze could raise £ 2.6 billion for the public purse, a much-needed contribution to the estimated £20 to £ 30 billion black hole in spending that Ms Reeves needs to fill. If the 5p per litre cut to fuel duty expires, it could cost households £7.3billion by 2029. The AA said this 5p cut is preventing prices at the pump from spiralling out of control to the worst...

There’s a lot going on across the pond at present, from concerns about an AI bubble about to explode, the ongoing impact of Trump’s tariffs and, finally, ominous forecasts about the mighty US economy from people right at the top. When someone on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, in this case Christopher Waller, warns of “eye-popping” lay-offs to come, there was only ever going to be one outcome: panic.
