According to the DWP, around 1.2 million adults across the UK receive PIP support for 87 musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. The non-means-tested, and tax-free benefit consists of a daily living component and a mobility component. Those who are entitled to the higher rate of both could receive £749.80 every four weeks.
PIP helps people aged over 16 (and under state pension age) who are living with long-term physical or mental health conditions, disabilities or learning difficulties.
People who suffer from any of 87 MSK conditions could be entitled to the cash. These conditions are defined as injuries and disorders that affect the body’s movement, such as damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs and blood vessels.
Some of the common conditions include back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, lupus and ankylosing spondylitis.
The daily living component has a lower weekly rate of £73.90 and a higher rate of £110.40. Meanwhile, the mobility component has a lower rate of £29.20 and a higher rate of £77.05, meaning anyone entitled to both the enhanced elements will receive £749.80 every four weeks.
The latest data shows that around 1.2 million people were getting PIP support for MSK conditions. This includes around 1.17 million in England and Wales, 664 in Scotland and 980 living abroad.
