Tesco issues 1-day warning to Clubcard shoppers | Personal Finance | Finance

Tesco shoppers are being urged to check their accounts as a huge batch of Clubcard vouchers is about to expire. Millions of pounds’ worth of points are set to expire, and anyone who doesn’t act quickly could lose them for good. The supermarket has reminded customers that they now have just one day left to spend or extend them before they disappear.

Clubcard vouchers are issued four times a year – in February, May, August and November – and each set remains valid for two years. The vouchers, due to expire this week, were originally released in February 2024, meaning they will become invalid at 11.59pm on February 28. After that time, they cannot be used in-store, online or with any Clubcard Reward Partner.

Tesco estimates that around £11million worth of vouchers are still sitting unused in customer accounts.

And with more than 20 million people signed up to Clubcard, the supermarket is urging shoppers to double-check their balances so they do not miss out.

Clubcard members earn points every time they shop online or in store, and these are later converted into vouchers that can be redeemed in Tesco or with selected partners.

But there is also a simple way to extend the expiry date if you’re not ready to spend the full amount.

Only a tiny amount needs to be spent, even as little as 50p. Once the transaction goes through, Tesco refunds the remaining value back into the customer’s Clubcard account in the form of new points.

Those points are then reissued as fresh vouchers with a brand-new expiry date two years in the future.

For example, if you use 50p of a £5 voucher, Tesco will return 450 points to your account, worth £4.50, resetting the clock on when the voucher must be used.

Shoppers who prefer not to spend their vouchers in Tesco can also choose from the retailer’s range of Rewards Partners, where points can be doubled or even tripled in value.

Popular partners include Pizza Express, Alton Towers and Hotels.com, meaning some shoppers may get far more value by redeeming their vouchers outside the supermarket.

Anyone unsure about their current balance can check online. After logging in to the Tesco Clubcard website, customers should click on “My Clubcard account” and then “Vouchers”.

A full list of available vouchers, including those nearing expiry, will appear.

Unused vouchers can either be spent instantly online or printed out at home for use in stores.
