Singer-songwriter Morrissey, whose full name is Steven Patrick Morrissey, shared a heartbreaking confession to his fans during a recent gig. The 66-year-old, who was wearing a black shirt and trousers for the concert, took some time away from the set list to open up about death. In a sad moment with the arena, he said: “When you come to the end of this passion play you call life, you will be either shoved in a hospice, shoved in a home, or at the mercy of the NHS, which is a fate worse than life…” It comes as the star had to cancel his first US concert of the 2026 tour just hours before it was set to take place. He also had to cancel concerts in California due to an “adverse reaction to a prescription medication”.

He added: “The only thing that will kill me is the hospital food.” The crowd cheered and applauded the star before she performed I Live in Oblivion from his 14th solo album called Bonefire of Teenagers.

The star has previously branded the album “the best album of [his] life”, with the song I Live in Oblivion mentioning just how bad he feels NHS hospital food is.

It’s not the first time he’s criticised the NHS, as back in 2014, he told NME Magazine: “I don’t know a single person who wants a [hospital] bed, trying to recover from hospital food. If your illness doesn’t kill you then the hospital food sees you off. That’s what it’s there for. Anyway, it was my time to go to pieces. Much overdue.”

Morrissey has been performing for decades as a solo artist and before that as the frontman of The Smiths.

In September last year, however, he had to cancel two shows in America due to a “credible threat on his life”.

He was set to perform in Connecticut and Massachusetts, but cancelled both out of “abundance of caution”.

An official statement was posted on his Facebook account at the time, which read: “In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life.

“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and audience, tonight’s engagement at Foxwoods has been cancelled. We appreciate your understanding.”
