If you’re not somebody who travels light, and instead, always struggles to pack everything you need to in your designated luggage space, then you’ll want to listen to a pilot’s wife’s piece of advice so you can sneak a third bag onto the plane.

It’s a hack that won’t get you in trouble with the airline you’re flying with, because they won’t be able to tell what you’ve carried on – so it’s a win-win situation.

Laurie, who posts her travel tips on social media, wrote on Instagram: “After airport security and getting coffee and all the fun people watching that you do while walking to your airplane boarding area, do this.”

She demonstrated removing her cross-body bag and putting it on top of her bigger personal bag. Laurie then got her small suitcase and used “gravity” to shake her suitcase a couple of times so the items in her bag moved downwards.

“Use gravity and shake your suitcase up and down a few times,” she urged, continuing: “That movement will jiggle items down to make space for your liquids bag and maybe a pouch.”

Since you’ve already been through security, you won’t have to stress about getting everything out of your big suitcase now, meaning that it’ll be so much smoother, and you’ll have more time to find a way to make things fit into your suitcase. There’s absolutely no need to stress.

“The solution is this: now your bag has room for your crossbody bag,” because you’re normally usually only allowed to take a small personal suitcase, and a reasonably sized personal bag – not a crossbody as well, because you’ll often be asked to put it into your case or personal bag.

Of course, you’ll need to ensure that your small suitcase isn’t jam-packed full of stuff and that there’s a reasonable amount of room in there; otherwise, the hack won’t work and you will end up stressing yourself out.

Laurie explained that as soon as you’re on the plane, you can “take it out” so you can use the things you put in the bag, because, for example, if you want to do a face mask on your flight, you’ll need to be able to easily access it.

Just make sure that everything you need for your flight is in your smaller personal bag, as you don’t usually have to stow those in the overhead lockers, and can keep them near your feet as long as you’re not sitting in an exit row.

In the comments, people said the hack was “genius,” saying it was “such a good idea” and joking it was a “good arm workout before the flight”.

In another video, she recommended different packing methods to make the most out of the space that you have in your suitcases, so you can pack as much as possible for your trip.

She recommended that you “use the folding or rolling method” to maximise space. She also said to “use packing cubes,” and can even get “compression packing cubes to fit more [things] in” your case.

Laurie also recommended you “pack travel outfits on one side and the other [side pack] essentials, shoes and toiletries” so everything is easy to find.
