A motoring expert has told drivers where is best to buy petrol and diesel to save cash as large firms continue purported profiteering. Founder of FairFuelUK, Howard Cox, said: “The major branded fuel supply chain continues to rip off drivers at will, with no Government checks whatsoever, despite promises to end decades of opportunistic profiteering.
“If you have a Costco near you, it’s the best and most honest place to buy diesel and petrol. Costco’s petrol is 9p per litre cheaper than BP’s national average, and diesel is 13p per litre cheaper.” The specialist then asked: “So how is it possible for Costco to deliver such great prices when the same six major refineries supply all forecourts? Costco has only 20 outlets, whereas BP has nearly 1,200, so you’d expect their buying power to deliver the best and lowest prices.”
Mr Cox told motorists that supermarkets remain the best buys compared with the major brands, too.
He said: “Asda is 5p lower on average than BP on petrol and 6p lower on diesel.
“So my advice to drivers is don’t waste time driving around looking for lower prices; head to your nearest supermarket forecourt and boycott BP, Shell and Esso, which remain the unchecked rip-off suppliers in the UK.”
It comes after a Labour minister refused to rule out an increase in fuel duty in the coming years in December.
Rachel Reeves confirmed in her Budget last year that the levy will be frozen again for five months until September 2026.
Rates will then gradually return to March 2022 levels by March 2027.
The planned increase in line with inflation for 2026-27 will also be cancelled, the Chancellor confirmed.
Simon Lightwood said: “You’re asking me to speculate way into future years here.”
He added: “You’re asking me to speculate on future Budgets, and I think I’ll leave that for the Chancellor of the Exchequer to make those decisions.”
It comes as drivers in the UK can now check fuel prices at every petrol station nationwide. A new Government initiative, known as Fuel Finder, “allows the public to compare prices easily by supplying real‑time data to third‑party apps and websites”, the RAC reports.
