Valentine’s Day offers the ideal opportunity to show loved ones extra affection, with couples and friends planning special outings to mark the romantic occasion.
But one woman has revealed how her boyfriend of seven months appeared to call time on their relationship following an incident during their first Valentine’s Day together, leaving her devastated and bewildered. She went on to Reddit to recount what happened.
« I was so looking forward to our first V-Day together, » the user wrote. « I made us reservations for an early dinner at our favourite steakhouse and the plan was to come back to my place after that to watch a movie and have dessert (I got us a little heart-shaped chocolate cake) and ‘dessert’. »
The woman continued by describing herself as tall and slender with a rapid metabolism, which she explained has boosted her appetite as she requires more food to maintain her weight. Her boyfriend, meanwhile, shared similar physical characteristics – tall and slim-framed – but possessed a considerably smaller appetite than hers.
« So it’s always been a bit of a joke that I need to eat more (and more frequently) than he does but until our V-Day date I didn’t really think it was an issue, » she detailed in her post.

The evening had begun promisingly, with her date presenting flowers and a ‘really sweet’ card, whilst she gifted him an Apple Watch he’d been longing for. The couple then made their way to the restaurant to place their orders.
Recalling the evening, the woman said: « When we get there I dive in to the bread basket and order a salad, surf and turf (small filet and lobster tail), and a couple sides to share (sautéed spinach and mashed potatoes) and he gets a small cup of soup and grilled salmon. Pretty standard steakhouse stuff. »
She went on to clarify that she would be settling the bill, given her boyfriend was a full-time student whilst she was in employment. As it was a significant occasion, she’d opted to splash out on a celebratory feast. She polished off nearly all her main course, leaving only a few sides, whereas her boyfriend consumed roughly half his salmon.
« Most of the way through the meal he starts looking annoyed and distant but won’t tell me what’s wrong, » she remembered. After receiving the bill, they’d planned to return to her flat where dessert awaited.
However, upon arrival, her boyfriend claimed he was exhausted and under the weather, preferring to head home rather than stay at his girlfriend’s place.
She recounted: « in the moment of course I am disappointed (because it’s V-Day and our first one at that! ) but tell him I’m so sorry and hope he feels better. I try to give him a kiss goodnight but he turns his head and tenses up. »
As it turns out, his aloof behaviour had a reason behind it. The following morning, the woman received a text from her boyfriend revealing that he wasn’t actually ill.
Instead, he was put off by the amount of food she had consumed at dinner, accusing her of ‘making a pig’ of herself.
« Now I do NOT shovel my food in and I have impeccable table manners so it’s not that, it’s definitely just the volume of food, » the woman clarified. « I try calling him but he won’t pick up, texts me back saying he isn’t up to talking and he needs some time to think.
« A couple hours later he texts again saying he’s thought about it and wants to break up, that my eating has upset him for a while and he was trying to see if he could get over it but he can’t. »
However, in an update to her post, the woman revealed that her now ex-boyfriend confessed he’d been wanting to end their relationship for some time as he’d started seeing another woman behind her back, whom he had met on that very Valentine’s Day.
Despite all this, he refused to return the Apple Watch to her, arguing that ‘it had been a gift’ and he was right to keep it.
« So, all in all, a bit of an expensive and hurtful lesson but it certainly could have been worse. Looking forward to a brief break from the dating scene and then hopefully dating more mature people, » she concluded her post.
