It’s a nostalgic treat typically dished out in s dining halls at lunchtime, but you can recreate it at home in just half an hour.

School cake – a straightforward sponge topped with a generous layer of white icing and colourful sprinkles – has been taking social media by storm as home bakers try their hand at making it in their own kitchens.

However, instead of combining everything and baking it conventionally, many are turning to their air fryers – a method those who enjoyed it during their school days would never have imagined.

Posting the recipe, Swan Brand UK revealed on TikTok that you need sugar, butter, eggs, milk, flour and baking powder for the recipe.

The home baker then combines all the ingredients before preparing a greased baking tray and transferring the mixture in, ready for the air fryer.

The footage continues: « Air fry at 160°C for 30 minutes. Top with thick icing and sprinkles. »

According to Cake Trays, during the early 20th century, it was typical for pupils to bring homemade cakes and treats into school to share with their peers.

The most prevalent variety of school cake is a sponge, which is typically prepared using flour, sugar, eggs, and butter and presented with a coating of jam or icing on top.

The statement adds: « School cakes can also come in a variety of other flavours, including chocolate, vanilla, and lemon. They are often made in large batches and cut into individual portions for serving. »
