Nintendo lovers have been given their first look at fan-favourite character Yoshi in the upcoming Super Mario movie. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a direct sequel to the 2023 box office hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, lands in cinemas on April 1, 2026.
The film is created by Nintendo alongside Despicable Me studio Illumination. It will feature the returning voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as his brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Jack Black will also make a comeback as the villainous Bowser, but it’s the arrival of everyone’s favourite green dinosaur that has tongues wagging.
The trailer shows Mario and Luigi arrive at a giant, upturned pyramid in a desert village where a blocked pipe is uncovered to reveal Yoshi. The dinosaur then joins the pair as they team up with Peach and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) once again during an adventure into outer space.
Nintendo fans have reacted with delight to the new trailer, with one going as far as saying Yoshi’s appearance made them « teary ». Many Reddit users praised the use of Yoshi’s usual sounds instead of the character also being voiced by a big-name actor.
One Redditor wrote: So glad they didn’t have Yoshi speak full sentences. His noises are damn cute. »
Another agreed: « I’m glad Yoshi is making Yoshi noises and not voiced by Tom Holland or a BTS guy. »
A third said: « Yoshi looks so precious in this movie and I got teary when he showed up. Had to try not to fangirl too loud and wake up my mom.
« I’m so excited to see him in this and that it seems his Japanese VA is back. » Fellow Nintendo fans praised the number of easter eggs in the trailer for eagle-eyed gamers.
One said: « 10/10 trailer for me. There’s just so much going on.
« It’s Odyssey, Galaxy, Mario 2 and 3 all smushed together. I’m super excited for it. »
Another added: « Yoshi with a Super Scope AND Baby Mario and Luigi. This movie is gonna be weird (in a good way). »
Another user said: « This just looks very chill and fun. » A fourth said: « Another $1B in gross ticket sales incoming. »
Yoshi has long been a staple of Mario games, first appearing in Super Mario World in 1990 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Since then, he’s had his own spin-off series and appears in other beloved Nintendo games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.
Yoshi isn’t the only new character appearing in the film. He’ll be joined by Bowser Jr, voiced by Benny Safdie, and Roslina, voiced by Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson.
