During the winter months, condensation and mould can quickly turn into your worst nightmare as it becomes more difficult to keep your home well-ventilated.
Mould growing in your home can have a severe impact on both your health and your finances, especially with the looming increase in energy bills.
Exposure to mould can lead to a range of health issues including respiratory problems and infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia, as well as allergies and other issues like nausea, headaches and eye irritation.
A cleaning TikTok influencer shared her affordable handy 10-second hack to get rid of mould around your windows.
In her TikTok video, Kiraa, said to her 208.4K followers: « I noticed a lot of mould growing around my window seals, so I wanted to show you my favourite way to get rid of it.
« I started by removing all the moisture on my window, then sprayed the mouldy areas with Astonish Mould and Mildew Remover – my absolute favourite. »
Then she explained that she places cotton pads over the places where she sprayed the product so it works more effectively on the mouldy areas.
Kiraa recommended leaving it there to act for an hour and to then wipe down the surface effectively removing the mould.
The influencer used the Astonish Mould and Mildew Remover which can be found at many shops like Iceland or Sainsbury’s for just £1.50 and cotton pads which will cost you no more than £1 from Boots or Poundland.
She added: « It was a bit tricky to reach the higher spots because I’m short, but the results are amazing. »
According to the official figures, 5% of homes in England had a problem with damp in 2023, which is higher than in any of the last 5 years.
The NHS reportedly spends at least £1.4 billion every year treating illnesses related to damp and mould in housing.
In some severe cases, mould can even be fatal, especially for those who are more vulnerable.
Two-year-old Awaab Ishak tragically passed away from a respiratory condition caused by mould exposure in his home on a Rochdale estate in 2020.
Mould around windows is often caused by condensation, which occurs when warm, moist air inside the home comes into contact with the cold surface of the window.
Water droplets will form on the window or around it, creating a damp environment that is ideal for mould growth.
Poor ventilation also worsens the issue as it traps the moisture, further encouraging the mould to grow.
