A ‘classic’ Christmas film boasting a star-studded cast, hailed by fans as ‘essential’ festive viewing, has made its way onto Netflix.
As the holiday season descends, families worldwide are settling in for cosy nights by the fire, indulging in their favourite Christmas films. Regardless of how many times they’ve been watched, these comforting classics are best enjoyed in snug pyjamas.
This year, Netflix has unveiled a slew of original Christmas films, hoping to replicate the success of K-Pop Demon Hunters. Although not a Christmas film, this animated feature holds the title of Netflix’s most-watched film ever.
Netflix kicked off with A Very Little Ex-Mas, featuring Alicia Silverstone, known for Clueless, as a mother striving to keep her impending divorce from Rules of Engagement’s Oliver Hudson from spoiling the holidays. Co-starring British actress Jameela Jamil, it offers a delightful 90-minute escape on a chilly evening.
Next, Netflix transported viewers to France with Champagne Problems, a romantic tale of Minka Kelly’s wine expert finding love amidst a business deal. While not overtly festive, Champagne Problems possesses enough charm to captivate audiences by the time the end credits roll, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Despite the arrival of December, it seems the company’s original films are more geared towards Oscar contention next year. The forthcoming big-hitters include George Clooney and Adam Sandler’s Jay Kelly, as well as the third instalment of Knives Out.
This shift in focus is unlikely to perturb viewers, as many tend to revisit their festive favourites rather than explore new offerings. Fortunately, Netflix added a beloved Christmas classic on Monday (December 1).
The 2003 film Love Actually explores various facets of love through ten interconnected stories featuring a diverse cast of characters. The narrative unfolds over six weeks leading up to Christmas, with each week marking a countdown to the festive day.
Directed by Richard Curtis, Love Actually encapsulates all the elements of a quintessential Christmas film. It boasts grand romantic gestures, an elaborate nativity play, and even features the Prime Minister grooving to Girls Aloud.
The star-studded ensemble includes Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy and Rowan Atkinson. Plus, Martin Freeman, Joanna Page, Kris Marshall and Andrew Lincoln make appearances.
Now recognised as one of Britain’s most triumphant cinematic achievements, critics were initially divided about Love Actually when it first hit screens, earning a modest 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s verdict stated: « A sugary tale overstuffed with too many stories. Still, the cast charms. »
As we’re all aware today, Love Actually has become not merely a quintessential festive film, but stands amongst the most significant British productions of the 21st century. Devotees continue flocking to IMDB to share their passionate appreciation for the beloved romantic comedy.
@Ed-Shullivan declared: « I have lost count of how many times I have watched this wonderfully written and acted Christmas romance themed classic film. At least once a year so that would be at least seventeen (17) times now. Great songs, a superb cast from top to bottom, heartwarming romances, and of course a must see ‘FEEL GOOD’ ending. »
@jessicafoggie penned: « I just adore this movie. Every year I watch it multiple times at Christmas. So many stories all woven together seamlessly with highs and lows across the emotional spectrum. There’s a nice mix of actors and they all fit their roles so nicely. The exploration of love and what it means to different people along with what it can cause us to do is all covered. »
Twitter user @Sunday3pm enthused: « Love Actually has to be one of the best Christmas holiday movies ever made! It’s still brilliant 20 years later! It will make you laugh, cry, shock you and in the end make you grab your loved ones and be thankful they are in your life! It has a storyline for everyone! A funeral, a wedding, an affair, an almost love affair. A young love, a new love, a politician in love! An adult film stars love, a love abroad and an unrequited love. »
Love Actually is available to stream on Netflix.
