
An action thriller starring Tom Cruise that returned to Netflix last month is hailed by one fan as « the best movie ever ». Jack Reacher (2012) follows titular US Army Major Military Police investigator Jack, (played by Cruise) who has stepped away from the service and become a drifter when the story begins.
But he’s gradually dragged back into the thick of it after a military sniper is accused of carrying out a mass shooting, and Jack comes to doubt the police’s account of what happened. Joining Cruise in a star-studded cast is Gone Girl-star Rosamund Pike, iconic director Werner Herzog, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins and Jai Courtney.
The film is based One Shot by Lee Child, the ninth book his his popular Jack Reacher series of novels, and was directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
The first Jack Reacher film was returned to the streaming platform last November 1, as was the 2016 follow-up, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016).
And while the first has fairly low scores of 64% and 67% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Popcornmeters, which reflect the response of approved critics and general audiences, respectively, fans of the series showered it with praise.
One fan on the platform said: « One of the film’s greatest strengths lies in its action sequences, which are both intense and expertly executed.
« Tom Cruise gives a strong performance as Jack Reacher, demonstrating his charisma and prowess as an action star. »
Another called it the “best movie ever », while another added that though Cruise isn’t as described in the books, he « almost always does a great job in action movies, and doesn’t disappoint here either, excellent movie! ».
A third described the film as a « slam dunk! » and said they were kept « intrigued and on the edge of my seat from start to finish ».
Fans acknowledged that some may have disliked it due to how if differs from the book, but enjoyed it all the same.
It was also praised on IMDb, where the film has a 7/10 score. A user review on the site said its a « surprisingly fantastic film ».
They said it wasn’t what they were expecting, and the plot « developed really well and made it more of a ‘thinking movie’ than I anticipated ».
The film has a 15 certificate, and contains strong violence and one use of strong language.
